Set in over 1,000 acres of beautiful wild countryside, on the border of Kent and Sussex, Bewl Water Country Park is south east England's largest lake. Bewl Water hosts numerous sporting leisure possibilities from trout fishing, to windsurfing on the lake, with cycling, horse riding and walking round the lake itself. The venue also boasts a visitor centre with cafe, bike hire and a choc-full calendar of events over the summer months.

The trail is a 13 mile loop round the lake, which varies from mountain bike singletrack close to the lake edge, to country lanes taking you more inland. The scenery is stunning and makes up for relatively tame riding terrain. More experienced riders will find Bewl Water a little dull as it lacks any real flow or technical challenge, however this does lend itself to a wider range of abilities, offering something for the whole family to enjoy on a dry day.

The family riding does miss out on the full marks due to country lanes inevitably being shared with traffic, and however minimal this is (and drivers are very respectful round these lanes), it always poses a danger. The greater danger, strangely, is of cyclists careering in the opposite direction with limited control round virtually blind corners. Collisions aren't that uncommon, and caution is worth exercising. Some of the hills are fairly unforgiving too for the less fit, but that's another story. That aside it is a pleasant day out in a beautiful part of the country.

Getting there

Bewl Water Country Park is situated just one mile south of Lamberhurst off the main A21 London to Hastings Road. Turn off the A21 at the traffic islands marked with brown tourist sign and follow road to entrance gate.
